LET FREEDOM RING A benefit concert for the victims of September 11, 2001 100% of the concert proceeds will be donated to The September 11th Fund established by United Way ... Artists scheduled to appear are Susan Anton, Jack Jones, Howard Keel, Hal Linden, Barry Manilow, Peter Marshall, Suzanne Somers, and more. "Let Freedom Ring" Benefit Concert "When McCallum Theatre programming director Mitch Gershenfeld called Barry's office two weeks ago to see if he'd be interested in doing a benefit for the victims of the terrorist attacks, [Mitch] and his colleagues were thinking that, as employees of a cultural center named after Bob Hope, they should be doing something to carry on the work Hope did for more than 50 years whenever America was in trouble ... Barry was the first guy Mitch called. 'As an artist, and frankly as a human being, the only way to get through this is to stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about other people,' he said ... Barry's staff e-mailed Mitch an MP3 file of a song Barry and [Bruce] Sussman wrote in 1987 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, 'Let Freedom Ring' ... [Barry] forgot about it until somebody played it for him after the Sept. 11 attacks. It made him feel good. He thought it would be good for the McCallum benefit. Mitch liked it so much, he named the show after the song. Barry also had a desire to sing two [more] uplifting songs, 'Daybreak' and 'I Made It Through The Rain'." [ Article "Valley musical resources bridge an ethereal plane" by Bruce Fessier (The Desert Sun, 10/3/2001) ] "If music gives voice to the human spirit, then Saturday's musical performance, 'Let Freedom Ring,' can be credited for lifting a sold-out crowd to the heights of the phantom towers of the World Trade Center ... [Jack] Jones' daughter, Nicole, 10, joined in the 94-voice chorus backing Barry Manilow of Palm Springs in the concert finale of Manilow's song, 'Let Freedom Ring' ... [Artists] donated their time out of a sense of need to contribute to the relief effort." [ Article "Valley music stars unite to help victims" by Bruce Fessier (The Desert Sun, 10/7/2001) ] |

England/Windsor (Elton John Residence) |
Since the first ball in 1999, Sir Elton John has opened his England home to house this spectacular event. The evening will host performances by Barry Manilow, Donna Summer and the Elton John Band. The stars at Sir Elton John's annual party were in their element as they dressed for the Eighties. The White Tie and Tiara Ball had an Imperial Russia theme, complete with a giant marquee covered in real gold leaf in the style of a traditional Russian Orthodox church, while areas of the singer's 38-acre Old Windsor estate were transformed into ice rinks with waiters on skates serving cocktails. [Guests] paid 1,000 each to attend the ball in aid of the singer's charity, the Elton John Aids Foundation. Now in its fifth year, it has established itself as a highlight of the showbusiness calendar ... Entertainment included Sir Elton belting out a song with the help [of] Barry Manilow. ("Diamonds and divas" by Andre Paine, Evening Standard/This is London, 06/27/2003) This year's annual White Tie and Tiara Ball thrown by Elton John was the most spectacular yet, notching up an incredible 10-million price tag. The theme for the bash, which marked the tenth anniversary of the singer's AIDS Foundation, was Imperial Russia. Under a vast marquee decorated with real gold to resemble the onion domes of traditional Russian churches, a six-course banquet was served to celebrity guests who had jetted in from around the world ... they were entertained by Donna Summer, Barry Manilow and Elton himself. (Hello Magazine, 06/27/2003) Around 500 VIPs were invited to Elton's mansion near Windsor, Berks. Centrepiece of the White Tie And Tiara Ball, to mark the 10th anniversary of Elton's AIDS Foundation, was a giant marquee covered with real gold leaf to look like a Russian church ... Elton entertained and also flew in Barry Manilow and disco diva Donna Summer to sing a duet ... Elton's fundraising director Simon Prytherch said last night: "We are hoping to raise 1.5million for a very worthy cause. Our guests paid for tickets and also donated generous amounts to the charity. Elton wanted to make sure this was the party to upstage all parties."
