Valentine's Night with Barry Manilow! "My catalogue of music is perfect for Valentine's Day!" Barry Manilow tells ET's Thea Andrews backstage as he got ready to perform "An Evening of Music and Passion" at the Staples Center in Los Angeles Thursday night (February 14). "Tonight, Valentine's Day night is about romantic music, so it should be great fun. I'm pulling out stuff that I haven't done in years."
"I did a brand new arrangement of 'My Funny Valentine' which you can only do one night of the year, but I've never done it, so I did a beautiful new arrangement and my friend, Dave Koz, one of the great Sax players of our generation, he's here! I did this arrangement so it's a duet for me and for Dave, and we've never done it, so we're really excited. I'm going to have him come out of the audience playing and come up on the stage from the audience playing 'My Funny Valentine' with me."
"Which is the most romantic song that I do? I would say it would be 'Could It Be Magic'. It was the first romantic song that I had written back in the 1970s and I still do it every night. It still holds up. It's a beautiful romantic song based on a Chopin prelude." |

Barry Manilow's Very Special Valentine's Day Concert! What could be better than spending Valentine's Day with the man who writes the songs that make the whole world sing? How about being serenaded by him? Only our Victoria Recano was backstage with Barry Manilow as he performed "An Evening of Music and Passion" at the Staples Center in Los Angeles (February 14).
"I just can't wait to do this show. It's going to be a different feeling out in the house. I bet it's going to be a very romantic feeling, people will be holding hands and groping and feeling and touching. It'll be great (laughs)." Most romantic thing that has ever happened at one of Barry's shows? "A lot of guys ask their girls to get married, and they would send back a request to me whether they could do it live, and I would allow them to do it in the microphone in front of everybody, and then I would sing some song that made sense. It's a beautiful moment. These people just fall apart. Me too! It's so moving."
A message for two special guests in the audience, Donny Osmond and his wife Debbie: "Donny, please, stay in your seat this time. He'll know what I'm talking about. When we did Utah, during 'Can't Smile Without You', he jumped up on the stage, grabbed the mike away from me and sang the end of 'Can't Smile Without You'. I nearly pee'd in my pants 'cause I couldn't see him coming!" |
