Wasn't Music Great in the "Summer of '78"?

For those of you who might not remember ("Are you YOUNG?"), the Summer of '78 was a time when...

  • Mainstream Top 40 Radio still embraced Barry's music!
  • Singles were still "45's".
  • Albums were still "LP's" (...or 8-tracks).
  • "Mandy", "I Write The Songs", "Looks Like We Made It" and "Weekend In New England" were listener favorites on those All-Time Top 100/300/500 Countdowns.
  • "Can't Smile Without You" had made its mark on the charts during the Spring.
  • Fans were celebrating Barry's latest studio album ("Even Now"), the follow-up to Barry's double "live" #1 smash.
  • Beatle fans were hoping for a reunion of the Fab Four so much that they panned the "Sgt. Pepper's" movie and managed to get Capitol to release a Single version of "Sgt. Pepper's/With A Little Help From My Friends" instead!
  • Rolling Stones fans were wondering if the group would ever break up.
  • Elvis Presley was still dead, but back then more people believed it...
  • The single "Even Now" was overshadowed by another Manilow track that took radio (and discos) by storm ("Copacabana (At The Copa)").
  • Movie-goers were still suffering from "Night Fever" - John Travolta's singing in "Grease" never sounded better!!
  • "Ready To Take A Chance Again", from the movie "Foul Play" took off at Summer's end where Copacabana left off, delaying the release of "Somewhere In The Night" until December.
  • Bob Seger fans were anxiously awaiting the next release from Seger's "Stranger In Town" album (a ballad called "We've Got Tonite"...)
