MANILOW SINGS SINATRA
(See the DISCOGRAPHY for liner notes!)
Rolling Stone Magazine captured the enduring appeal of Barry Manilow when it anointed him "a giant among entertainers" and proclaimed him to be "the showman of our generation". Manilow's unparalleled performing career has included virtually every facet of entertainment, including not only singing and songwriting, but film, television, stage and publishing. He is the undisputed #1 adult contemporary artist of all time - based on Radio & Records' Industry charts - and his record sales exceed 58 million worldwide. He has received Grammy, Emmy and Tony Awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Manilow's 30th album, Manilow Sings Sinatra, a tribute to the great songs that Frank Sinatra made famous, will be released in the fall of 1998. The album is produced by Manilow and the legendary record producer, Phil Ramone, who produced Frank Sinatra's Grammy-winning Duets I & II. The collaboration reunites the pair who teamed up on Manilow's Platinum release, Singin' With The Big Bands, in 1994.
In the late 70's, as Manilow's star was rising, Frank Sinatra was quoted in the UK press in reference to Manilow saying, "He's next."
On Manilow Sings Sinatra, Manilow is collaborating with several legendary arrangers including Johnny Mandel, Patrick Williams and Don Sebesky, on such classic Sinatra tunes as "Angel Eyes", "All the Way", "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning", and "You Make Me Feel So Young", among many others.
"To me, this is a great opportunity to produce an album of great American songs, and to pay a modest and subtle tribute to the man who popularized them," said Manilow. "Sinatra respected songwriters and arrangers so much that he would credit them before singing each of his songs," Manilow remembered. "He was always true to his high standards. As the trends came and went, he continued to only be associated with songs that matched those standards." "He taught us all," Manilow continued. "I hope that my take on some of his great songs is an apt tribute to Frank's overwhelming contribution to music."
